Duluth, MN Engagement Photo Locations
Here are a few of my favorite locations for engagement photos in Duluth:
Brighton Beach
The best sandy beach on the shore of Lake Superior? Brighton Beach, located on the far east end of Duluth’s Lake Walk. It has picturesque views and is full of black river rock and surrounded by giant boulders. This is a personal favorite location of mine for the diversity: Lake Superior, rocky beach, large boulders, trees, wildflowers. It’s truly a beautiful spot.
Duluth Rose Gardens
The Duluth Rose Garden is a gorgeous spot for whimsical, romantic garden-themed engagement photos with Lake Superior as your backdrop. You’ll find the Duluth Rose Garden inside Leif Erikson Park. The garden has over 3000 rose bushes and other plants and a charming marble Gazebo. You can also have your wedding here! If you want to learn more about planning your wedding at the Rose Gardens, go here!
Canal Park
If you want a more urban backdrop for your engagement session, then Canal Park might be everything you’re looking for! There are a lot of different backdrops to take photos in front of throughout Canal Park, including the Aerial Lift Bridge, the colorful walls, the brick buildings, and so much more! You can also always pop into a brewery or a cafe for photos in this area. One of my favorite spots is Love Creamery, which has delicious handcrafted ice cream in an artisan style, and it is a fun spot to take some photos!
Park Point Beach
Park Point Beach is the opposite of what many people think of when they imagine the shoreline on the North Shore. It doesn’t have a rocky coastline, but instead it’s a gorgeous sandy beach. Park Point is right on Lake Superior and is surrounded by prairie grass with picturesque views. It’s ideal for playful, cinematic, beachy engagement photos. Check out a couple’s session I photographed at Park Point Beach here!

When Should You Take Engagement Photos in Duluth, MN?
Here’s an overview of what you can expect during each season in Duluth:
Spring (March – June)
Spring is the ‘brownest’ and most unpredictable time of year. If you’re open to taking a gamble on the weather and don’t really care about whether the trees are budding or you’re hiking through the snow, then you can plan a spring engagement session.
Summer (June – September)
Summer is hands down one of the most popular times for engagement sessions, as the weather is comfortable, the days are longer, and there’s plenty of warmth and sunshine. You’ll also get gorgeous lighting and sunsets during a golden hour session.
Fall (September – December)
Many couples choose this time of year (along with summer) to have their engagement session, and it’s easy to understand why. You’ll have gorgeous fall colors and a moody, dramatic backdrop to work with.
Winter (December – March)
If you love the idea of a snowy backdrop and the cold, having an engagement session in Duluth during winter will be *chef’s kiss*. Be aware – it gets quite chilly up here, and the sun sets early, so plan accordingly and bring hand warmers along with you to your session!

Tristian + Devyn’s Summer Engagement Session at Brighton Beach in Duluth, MN
We took Tristian and Devyn’s engagement photos on an overcast late-summer date at Brighton Beach in Duluth.
Brighton Beach also fit their vibe really well. Their wedding will have a rock wall/woodsy feel, and they wanted their engagement photos to have that same rocks + woods feel rather than something super “beachy.”
This was an extra special engagement session for me. Devyn (Dev) is my younger cousin, and she’s getting married to the love of her life, Tristian, in May 2028, at Woods & Co Weddings + Events in Pepin, WI. Dev is a hairstylist based in the Twin Cities but travels all throughout MN/WI (@devmossmplshair). We work together quite a bit for weddings up north, and it’s always a joy. Well, that’s where we loop in Tristian. Devyn was working a wedding up north, and Tristian was one of the groomsmen, and she noticed he kept looking at her throughout the day. He was living/working up this way and moved down to be with her about 6 months ago. The rest is history.
They had two outfits for their engagement session, and their dog, Renegade (Renny), took the trip North with them. We included him at the start of both outfits, and he showed off his smile the entire time.
There was one very specific photo Dev wanted to get involving Renny: balancing her engagement ring on his nose. Tristian was nervousssss about attempting it, especially since we were on a rocky beach, but we got it, and it all went off without a hitch!
