Oh my goodness, you’re ENGAGED! As you begin to tackle all of the fun tasks that come with wedding planning, you might find yourself wondering how to book your dream wedding photographer. As a full-time wedding photographer (and recent bride!), I know firsthand just how important it is to find the perfect photographer for you. So if you’re looking for a little bit of guidance, keep reading!
Do Your Research
Every photographer is a little bit different. From editing styles, to posing, and even how the level of involvement they would have leading up to your wedding day. Nail down what kind of tones you like (warm and moody, true to color, light and airy, etc.). Are you looking for a photographer that does more classic portraits, or a photographer who has a more “candid” approach? When it comes to your wedding day, the right photographer will want to be involved. Whether that means helping with a timeline or even offering other resources to assist with wedding planning, there is someone out there for you.
Meet Them!
Fun fact: most couples end up spending more time with their photographer than each other on their wedding day. Make sure you are comfortable and enjoy spending time with them. When meeting them, ask yourself if the conversation is forced or if it flows easily. Is it easy to laugh with them or is the conversation pretty dry?
Ask Questions (LOTS of questions)
When you meet with your potential photographer, come prepared! Some questions to help get you started are:
- What happens if you can’t make it to my wedding?
- How do you back-up your images?
- How soon can we expect our gallery? When do we get sneak peeks?
- Do we have printing rights?
- How is the gallery delivered? (USB, online gallery, etc.)
- Are there any hidden fees? (Travel fees, second-shooter fees, etc.)
- What is your booking process?
- Are engagement photos included with our package?
Moving Forward with Booking
Once you find a photographer that checks all of the boxes, you’re ready to move forward with BOOKING THEM! 🙌🏻 When moving forward with booking, make sure there is a contract in place. Not only does this protect your photographer, but it protects you if anything were to go wrong. Once you receive the contract, read it thoroughly to ensure you understand every little term and/or condition. Most photographers will include a non-refundable retainer fee or something of that nature to lock in the date.
