It’s that time of year, friend! You know the one I’m talking about? Engagement session season!! As a full-time wedding and elopement photographer (and past bride), I know firsthand just how much excitement fills the air leading up to your engagement session. Two of the most commonly asked questions I get when a session is booked is, “What do we wear?!” and “Should we bring anything?” Well, I’m here to give you all the nitty-gritty details to make sure your engagement session goes out without a hitch. Here are 8 Must Have Items for Your Engagement Session.

Your Outfits:

1. Outfit #1

How you dress for your engagement session should be a reflection of you and your honey. Think of what you’re comfortable in, what feels like “ah, this is us.” If you’re looking for outfit tips, check out my Styling Tips for Your Engagement Session blog! Searching for even more inspo?! My Pinterest board has gotcha covered!

2. Outfit #2

Options, babe, options! The weather can change at the drop of a dime, or there could even be a wardrobe malfunction. The more prepared you are, the better. Double check with your photographer to see how many outfits are allowed for your particular session – and plan from there.

Onto the Practicals:

3. Lint Roller

I don’t know about you, but when I leave the house, I’m still finding fur from my pup on me. Lint rollers are great for not only pet hair, but also for getting rid of any leaves left from traipsing through a field. (I love adventuring with my couples!)

4. Hair Brush

Whether the wind is whipping on the day of your engagement session or not, having a hair brush always comes in clutch. In the event of wind, embrace it! You’ll be at peace knowing you can always brush your hair.

5. Hairspray

Even if you’re generally not a “hairspray person”, bring it! Smooth hair photographs really well; hairspray helps tame those pesky flyaways and wind-tousled hair!

6. Scissors

Never know when a scissors might come in handy! Pesky tags, hanger straps, etc.

7. Bug Spray

TRUST me on this one. Bug bites are the worst! ‘Nuff said.

8. Champagne!

I simply can’t end an engagement session without poppin’ champagne! Bring a bottle to end your session with a fun spray and a few sips. SO much fun!

So, let me guess: you’re planning for your upcoming engagement session and have NO idea what to wear😅 I have been there. As a full-time wedding and couples photographer (and past bride), I know how overwhelming and daunting the decision can be. By the end of this blog, you’ll be feeling confident and ready to take some incredible engagement photos with your love. Alright, let’s get into my styling tips for your engagement session.

DRESS FOR COMFORT

This one might seem like a no-brainer but WOW does it make a difference. Wearing something that you feel comfortable in makes the world of difference. Even if you want to buy something new for your photos, try to “break it in” by wearing it a couple times and moving around in it. In my engagement sessions, I love for my couples to be able to move around – whether that’s running, going in for a dip, or twirling around.

THINK NEUTRALS

When pairing outfits with your honey, keep in mind that neutrals (or earth tones!) photograph really well. Especially if you really want to compliment that location of your photos, wearing those tones will help you stand out but not clash with the environment.

LET’S TALK PATTERNS

Fun fact: patterns are not the enemy. I love a good floral print as much as the next person. My biggest tip is to choose subtle patterns – and avoid clashing!

LAYERS, LAYERS, LAYERS

I love a good layering moment. Packing or wearing layers allows you to ✨spice up✨ your photos without having to do a ton of outfit changes.

Now that you are set with some styling tips for your engagement session, all there’s left to do is pop some bubbly and get ready for your session 🥂

Insert “Walking in a winter wonderland” here 🎵 Kelsey and Chase’s Boom Island Park Winter Engagement Session was nothing short of breathtaking. Despite the blizzard conditions, these two were seriously such troopers on this cold winter day. There’s just something so romantic about a fresh blanket of snow and exploring with the love of your life. Prepare to witness some magic ✨

This sweet couple and I had so much fun venturing around Boom Island Park together. In between romantic shots, we took many breaks to use hand warmers (and to hop in the car to blast the heat). As frigid as a Minnesota winter is, the snow is always such a welcomed gift for a couples looking for that “winter engagement session” vibe. Even though we had hoped to have a view of the cityscape, we were happy with the little peaks we got. We wrapped up their winter session with Kelsey in a stunning emerald green lace dress. My fingers were literally NUMB so I have no idea how she looked so effortlessly beautiful (and not cold!?). Kelsey and Chase were full of so much grace and love for one another… Have I mentioned that I have the best job ever?!

Now that I have finally thawed out from this Boom Island Park Winter Engagement Session and the Rice Creek Winter Engagement Session, bring on SPRING! 😉 Speaking of Spring, be sure to follow me over on Instagram (@morganelizabethphotos) to keep up with me as I begin “busy season”. In the mean time, catch up on my latest blogs HERE. Until next time…

Alec and Athena’s Long Lake Regional Park fall engagement session in New Brighton, Minnesota was full of so much love and personality. This couple was so giddy and in love; I couldn’t stop beaming ear to ear during their shoot (also, their outfits were INCREDIBLE. You need to check out Athena’s dress… wow).

You wouldn’t know it by looking through these photos, but their session was so cold and windy. Despite the chill in the air, the leaves were changing colors on the trees and the grass in the open field was a beautiful golden tone – making for such a picturesque Fall engagement session. Alec and Athena weren’t afraid to be themselves in front of the camera, which made my “job” so much easier!

At the end of their session, they told me they brought some merch from their favorite YouTuber (Danny Duncan) to showcase their personalities and what they love. I love how unapologetically “themselves” they were throughout the entire session. Once we wrapped up their session, I hopped into my car feeling so giddy to have spent the afternoon capturing this sweet couple’s love story.

Caroline and Nathan were absolute naturals in front of the camera! This Rice Creek Regional Park Fall engagement session in Shoreview, Minnesota was so much fun! I absolutely love when a couple brings the energy to their session (and an energetic puppy, too).

Minnesota blessed us with such a perfect Fall day.

We met up in the parking lot and had zero trouble finding locations to shoot. This sweet couple frolicked in the golden, grassy fields and danced within the towering pines for the most picturesque Fall engagement photos.

As if their photos weren’t already flawless enough, they brought their puppy Enzo! If you are wondering if dogs are allowed in your engagement session, heck yes they are. Enzo had so much energy and kept us all laughing (which made those giggly pictures even easier to capture). We wrapped up their session by poppin’ some champagne and toasting to their future!

This beautiful couple ties the knot in October of 2022 and I cannot wait to capture another special moment in their lives.

Check out some highlights from their Rice Creek Fall engagement session below! If you’re loving this content, be sure to head over to my Instagram so you don’t miss a thing.
