As a full-time wedding photographer (and recent bride!), I know how many details go into planning your big day. Planning your wedding day is HUGE. Not only do you feel the pressure of finding the perfect wedding venue, booking your dream wedding photographer, and hashing out all the other little details, the logistics of your actual wedding day sometimes get brushed aside. But that’s where I come in! I’m letting you in on the 2 must-know getting ready tips to help your photos pop 💥 This one goes out to you, brides!

TIP #1

Believe it or not, the most overlooked part of a wedding day can often be what you are wearing.

I know, I know – what?! I’m not talking about your wedding dress that you’ve been dreaming of wearing. I am talking about what you are wearing while you are getting ready for your big day.

And even more specifically, what you are wearing underneath. That’s right, your BRA.

If your wedding dress is strapless, backless, or even a halter – proceed cautiously when it comes to choosing your bra. As if we didn’t already have enough reason to hate wearing bras… they leave marks or indents on the skin.

Unfortunately, it takes those marks quite a bit of time to disappear. The last thing you want is photos of you looking STUNNING in a dress that fits you like a glove, only to see indents of your bra straps or band.

My biggest suggestion to support the ‘ladies’ that morning? Opt for a bralette. Sometimes even a sports bra would work, as long as it zips in the front so you don’t have to pull it over your head. Which brings me to:

TIP #2

Now that we’ve taken care of what you’re wearing underneath while getting ready… what are you going to wear on top?!

Whether you and your girls are planning to wear matching robes or pajamas, make sure it’s not something you have to pull over your head. No matter how careful you are, your makeup or hair is bound to get messed up if you’re pulling a t-shirt over your head.

I am a huge fan of button-ups or even zip-ups for a wedding day. There are so many cute options out there that you won’t even miss wearing your comfy t-shirt. Even cuter!? Wear your soon-to-be HUBBY’S button-up. 🥰

There we have it; the 2 must-know getting ready tips. Looking for more wedding planning tips? Check out the blog HERE ✨ I gotchu!

Let’s talk about first looks! If you and your honey are still up in the air about whether or not to have a first look, have no fear. I’ve put together a sweet little list of 3 Alternatives to a First Look. As a full-time wedding photographer, I have seen my fair share of first looks, traditional “first looks” in the ceremony, and everything in between. Whatever you decide, my biggest piece of advice is to do what feels right for you. Lets’ get into it!

1. Private vows

One of my favorites! If you are nervous about spilling your heart in front of hundreds of your family and friends, this can be a great, intimate option for you two. You can stand back-to-back or face each other while holding hands and speak from the heart. When it comes to the ceremony, you can say a variation of your private vows, or say traditional vows; whatever feels most comfortable!

2. First touch

I love this option! You and your spouse can stand back-to-back, or around a door/corner from each other and simply hold hands and talk. If you choose to not have a first look, you most likely won’t see or talk to your spouse until the ceremony. A first touch can help calm some nerves and give you a few moments of peace and quiet together before jumping into the rest of your day. Such a sweet alternative.

3. Private letters

If you want everyone (including your photographer) to sob on your wedding day, write letters to each other before the ceremony and read them privately. This allows you to step away from chaos the morning of your wedding day and take a deep breath with your person. This is intimate like the vow option, but often includes more inside jokes and can be a real tear-jerker.

There we have it, friend! 3 Alternatives to a First Look. Once again, do what feels right for you and your honey! If you’re also in the market for some Wedding Day Exit Tips, click here. Welcome to the chapter of your life which is wedding planning!! Whether you’re just beginning to plan or you’re really in the thick of it, soak it up – no matter how stressful it is at times. Before you know it, you’ll be looking back at your wedding day photos wondering where the time went.

Hey… speaking of wedding day photos… 😉 I’m letting you in on my ultimate list of what items you should give your photographer for detail (or flat lay) photos.

Your wedding photographer may provide you with a list of what to include, and may refer to it as either details or flat lay details. A flat lay is a compilation of all the little details you want photographed on your big day. The smallest details are frequently the most important details that you want captured. Alright, let’s dive in!

Detail Photos List:

  • Dress
  • Veil
  • Bouquet
  • Shoes
  • Jewelry
  • Ring(s) – engagement + wedding bands
  • Paper suite (save the date, RSVP card, invitation, envelope with your names, etc.)
  • Vows
  • Perfume
  • Cologne
  • Tie
  • Watch
  • Cufflinks
  • Socks
  • Belt

Alright, now that you know what to include, be sure to check out my 5 Getting Ready Tips for Your Wedding Day to ensure you have a stress free morning. *Hint: put all your details in a box to be ready for your photographer; they will thank you. I know this is a quick little list, but trust me: this will be a game changer for your wedding day! Is there anything in the What to Include in Detail Photos list that you forgot about?! Let me know below!

Of all the days it is most important to be on your A-game, your wedding day takes the cake. As a bride, you have 14,830,239 crossing your mind leading up to “I Do”. That is why I have created the perfect list for you to put together a Wedding Day Survival Kit for your special day.

I am a planner. Now, believe me… that doesn’t mean things always go to plan, but at least I am prepared for when they don’t!

As a full-time wedding photographer (and recent bride) in the Twin Cities, Minnesota area, I have seen my fair share of crises uprise when a bride realizes she spilled something on her dress, has an unruly curl in her hair, or suddenly is pained with hunger.

Having a survival kit at your disposal makes for a much smoother, more relaxing day for you to focus on getting married to your best friend and enjoying the most important day of your life.

Wedding Day Survival Kit

  • A beautiful bag to hold your essentials
  • Deodorant
  • Small sewing kit
  • Tide-to-Go
  • Floss picks
  • Manicure kit
  • Scissors
  • Mouth wash
  • Cough drops
  • Earring backs
  • Hair ties
  • Hand sanitizer/Wet Wipes
  • Bobby pins
  • Hairspray
  • Bandaids
  • Q-Tips
  • Tissues
  • Chapstick
  • Oil blotting sheets
  • Ibuprofen/Advil
  • Tums
  • Eye drops
  • Fashion tape
  • Super glue
  • Eyelash glue
  • Safety pins
  • Granola bar(s), nuts, fruit, etc.

I’m not lying when I say I could make this list a mile long. As the bride, make sure to get your kit in order way before your big day. You know YOU best; if there’s something you absolutely know you can’t live without – add it in.

Drop me a comment below and let me know what else you plan to add to your survival kit. Sending you all the peace and good vibes for your wedding day.

Happy planning, love!

Xx, Morgan
